A Compact Entry Into Portable Cooling

Dyson has introduced its first portable handheld fan, the HushJet Mini Cool, now available for purchase at $99. While positioned at a premium compared with typical portable fans, the device is priced below many of Dyson’s other high-end products and undercuts rival Shark’s recently launched ChillPill, which retails for $149.99.

The HushJet Mini Cool weighs just 7.5 ounces and measures 38 millimeters in diameter, making it comparable in width to Dyson’s Supersonic hair dryer and PencilVac stick vacuum. Designed for portability, it includes a lanyard for hands-free use, a travel pouch, charging stand and USB-C cable.

Performance Specs Aim High

Despite its size, Dyson claims the HushJet delivers significant airflow. Its brushless DC motor spins at up to 65,000 revolutions per minute, producing air speeds of up to 80 feet per second, or roughly 55 miles per hour. By comparison, many portable fans operate between 3,000 and 7,500 RPM.

The device features five airflow settings plus a Boost mode for maximum output. Battery life reaches up to six hours on the lowest setting, with a full recharge taking approximately three hours.

Balancing Power and Sound

Dyson emphasized noise reduction in the fan’s design. The company engineered the nozzle to minimize high-pitched whirring, aiming for quieter operation. On its lowest setting, the HushJet runs at 52 decibels, comparable to the hum of a refrigerator. In Boost mode, sound levels rise to 72.5 decibels, slightly below the 77-decibel output of the Supersonic hair dryer.

Chief Engineer Jake Dyson described the product as the result of years focused on airflow engineering. The company first entered the bladeless fan category in 2009, and the HushJet represents its attempt to bring similar cooling technology into a handheld format.

Dyson vs. Shark Competition

The launch adds another chapter to the ongoing rivalry between Dyson and Shark. Shark’s ChillPill portable fan is heavier and generates lower peak airflow at 25 feet per second, but offers 10 speed settings, longer battery life and interchangeable heads with misting and cooling features.

Dyson’s approach centers on compact size and high-performance airflow, while Shark positions its product around versatility and added functionality.

Colors and Availability

The HushJet Mini Cool is launching in a stone/blush finish, with additional carnelian/sky and ink/cobalt color options arriving in May and June. Dyson has also announced upcoming accessories, including a universal mount designed for strollers and similar items.

As demand for portable cooling devices rises, the HushJet signals Dyson’s expansion into a smaller, more accessible segment of its product portfolio while maintaining its focus on engineering-led differentiation.
